Semaglutide FAQs | Weight Loss, Safety, Dosing & Eligibility

What Is Semaglutide?

Semaglutide is the active ingredient in prescription medications such as Wegovy® and Ozempic®. It belongs to a class of medicines called GLP-1 receptor agonists, which help support weight loss when used along with a healthy diet and regular exercise.

How Much Weight Can I Lose With Semaglutide?

Results vary by individual, but clinical studies show that people taking semaglutide for about 68 weeks lost an average of ~15% of their body weight, and about one in three lost more than 20% of their starting weight.

Who Is a Good Candidate?

Semaglutide may be recommended for adults who:

  • Have a BMI of 30 or higher (obesity),

  • Have a BMI of 27–29 with at least one weight-related health condition (like high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, or high cholesterol),

  • Adolescents 12 years or older with a BMI at or above the 95th percentile for age and sex.

A thorough medical evaluation is essential to determine whether semaglutide is safe and appropriate for you.

How Is Semaglutide Administered?

Semaglutide is given as a once-weekly injection. You can take it at any time of day, with or without food, but choose one consistent day each week.

Where Do I Inject Semaglutide?

The injection is placed just under the skin (subcutaneously), typically in the:

  • Upper arm

  • Abdomen

  • Thigh

Your clinician will show you proper injection technique and rotation patterns.

What Is the Maintenance Dose?

The typical ongoing dose used for weight-management treatment is 2.4 mg once weekly.

Who Should Not Take Semaglutide?

Semaglutide is not recommended if you have:

  • A personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (a rare thyroid cancer),

  • Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia type 2 (MEN2),

  • Known allergies to semaglutide.

There are also other situations where it may not be appropriate — your clinician will review your full medical history before prescribing.

What Are the Most Common Side Effects?

The most frequently reported side effects tend to be gastrointestinal, especially as your body adjusts:

  • Nausea

  • Diarrhea or constipation

  • Bloating

  • Heartburn or burping

  • Dizziness or upset stomach

Most side effects are mild and often improve with time and dose adjustments under medical supervision.
